The average rainfall in the Atacama Desert is less than one millimeter per year, making it fifty times drier than Death Valley in California, USA. I visited this amazing place on my way up and out of Chile during a backpacking trip in South America. Each oil painting was inspired by my reference photos taken on tours throughout the Atacama Desert landscape. The craters of Moon Valley and the unique expanse of the Salt Flats allured me into making these medium sized works of art. I worked loosely and quickly to cover each canvas in the colors of the landscape, while keeping the composition vague enough to intrigue the viewer to question what they are witnessing; is it snow or salt? Water or land? Summer or Winter?
